2011 Kia Sedona

The 2011 Kia Sedona is the South Korean automaker's minivan. Like every other full-size minivan offered for sale in the United States, the Sedona is being spruced up for the 2011 model year, though with the Kia, the changes are less significant than those on the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.

For 2011, the Sedona has been retooled with a new powertrain and some new entertainment and technology features. The new engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 with 271 horsepower, teamed to a new six-speed automatic transmission. With the new drivetrain, the Sedona manages better fuel economy than in the years past--up to up to 18/25 mpg, according to the EPA. For drivers who might be lured by Toyota's "swagger wagon" Sienna, Kia counters with a sport mode for the automatic transmission.

A Top Safety Pick in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's tests in the past, and historically a strong performer in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests as well, the Sedona has yet to be rated for the 2011 model year. Both agencies have changed their standards for the new model year, but the Sedona is essentially identical in safety performance to the 2010 model, since the only exterior changes are a mildly revised grille, which brings it into the family of Kia cars a bit more naturally.

Like the new 2011 Nissan Quest, the Sedona has a second-row seat that doesn't fold flat into the floor--it's also the same scenario in the Odyssey and Sienna, but not in the Chrysler minivans, which offer Stow 'N Go flexibility. The Sedona's third-row seat does fold into the floor, though.

New features for the Kia minivan include standard Bluetooth, in both the base LX and upscale EX versions, reverse parking sensors, second-row bucket seats, along with satellite radio and steering-wheel controls for the audio system. The EX edition adds power-adjusted front seats, power rear-quarter windows, and a rearview camera that projects its information into the rearview mirror. Options include a power package with the rearview camera on the Sedona LX; a navigation system is optional on the Sedona EX.

The Sedona EX Luxury package adds on leather seats, heated front seats, power-adjustable pedals, and a sunroof. The Entertainment package bundles in a CD changer, a DVD entertainment system and wireless headphones.

Pricing for the 2011 Sedona starts at $24,595, not including destination charges.

2011 Volkswagen Routan

The Volkswagen Routan minivan returns for the 2011 model year, with much of the upgrading that's taken place on its sister vehicles, the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan.

The biggest news is a new powertrain for the minivan family. A 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 is the sole engine available, and it's paired with a six-speed automatic. The front-drive Routan makes 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and based on our experience with the Chrysler minivans, it's a brisk, pleasant performer.

Exterior and interior changes keep the VW look intact. And Volkswagen still forgoes the Stow 'N Go seating that sets the Chrysler minivans apart; the Routan doesn't have fold-flat seats in the middle row, but the second-row captains' chairs can be removed entirely, leaving behind underfloor storage tubs.

Safety gear has been carried over. The usual front, side and curtain airbags are fitted, with anti-lock brakes and stability control. A rearview camera is now available, but the Routan doesn't get the blind-spot detection system offered on the Chrysler vans.

The Routan's been praised as a higher-quality version of the Chrysler minivans, but with the improvements to those vans, we're eager to see photos of the Routan. (The 2009 model is pictured here.) VW promises they're coming soon--but in the meantime, pricing has also been revealed. The base $26,930 Routan S includes manual sliding side doors, cruise control, an AM/FM/CD with auxiliary audio jack, cloth seats, and power windows/locks/mirrors.

The $31,770 SE adds power sliding side doors, a power driver seat, heated mirrors, power-adjustable pedals, a CD changer and Bluetooth, and comes with vinyl upholstery. A rear-seat entertainment system with twin LCD screens is an option on the SE, as is a navigation system.

The $37,390 VW Routan SEL tops the range with its standard sunroof, automatic climate control, navigation system, satellite radio, USB port and real-time traffic. Options include the DVD system, and a premium package with a megawatt audio system and dual power front seats.

We'll update this review once the Routan is available for a test drive. For now, see our in-depth review of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan, and if you're curious about new powertrains, take a look at our 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan first drive.

Mercedes Minivan

Mercedes-Benz has dabbed some fresh make-up and applied the nip and tuck scalpel to freshen up the looks of its revamped, family-hauling R-Class station wagon and it has also added some new high tech goodies.

Not that many of us have even seen one of these big barges on the road recently – and little wonder, because only about 200 of them were sold in South Africa during the entire 2009 which does makes you wonder why they bother with it at all, seeing that there are already 97 different Mercedes-Benz variations on the local market.

Sure, the R-Class is spacious and it brims with safety, luxury and comfort features, plus it wears the bragworthy three-pointed star label, but it is expensive and it competes in a market segment where there are a number of less expensive and cooler, sportier options from which to choose.

Why is it… you know… here? Well…

It is kinda difficult to find a good real reason for its existence other than the fact that the R-Class is probably just another Mercedes weapon to continue the ongoing war against its two direct Teutonic opponents, Audi (with its Q7) and BMW (with its X5 and X6), all three easier on the eye and sportier than the Merc.

However, there are also quite a few other, more rands and centsables to consider, such as Merc’s own Viano, the Volkswagen T5, the likeable Kia Sedona, the Hyundai H-1 and even, at a push, the ugly ducklings, SsangYong Stavic and Chrysler Grand Voyager.

In essence the big Merc wagon is a quiet, comfortable, safe upmarket long distance cruiser for a family of four, maybe five.

It is classy, it’s got presence and it has acres of luggage space although, rather surprisingly, the leg space for the back-seat occupants is not all that generous – particularly if the driver is of the long-legged, long-armed species.

Nice ride

Of the three refreshed R-Class models introduced to the local motoring media recently I drove the R300 CDI (R582 400) and the R300 (R577 400) on a long and rather boring N2 from Knysna to Port Elizabeth, but unfortunately not the flagship R500 4MATIC LWB (R823 400).

This particular stretch of road is hardly a testing terrain to evaluate any vehicle so I can’t tell you much about the R’s handling and roadholding.

In terms of ride quality though it scores very well. Both vehicles are well-insulated, quiet, comfortable and easy to drive and the cabins are typically Mercedes, a bit dark and sombre, but neatly off-set by silver trim, switches and dials. Although not a fan of sunroofs in extreme African sun, they do help to brighten up the interior. The tilting/sliding glass roof is standard on the V8 but an expensive optional extra on the two smaller models.

Of the two V6 models, most of us preferred the diesel option which felt a littler perkier than its petrol sibling, even though it is only fractionally quicker off the mark and has a top speed considerably down on the petrol model.

Not thirsty

With a claimed combined fuel consumption figure of 7.6l/100km, the R 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY model requires around 7% less fuel than the previous configuration which was offered in South Africa, whilst offering the same power output and enhanced performance.

The V6 diesel engine pushes out 140Kw and 440Nm against the petrol option’s 170kW/300Nm output.

Although the bigger V8-engined model is a long-wheel base, the two V6 models are only available in standard wheelbase format.

The big brother R500 with the V8 petrol engine churns out 285kW and a hefty 530Nm.

Drop-dead ‘coupé-like lines’…? Not really

Mercedes claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 9.5 seconds for the V6 diesel, a top speed of 215km/h, a combined fuel usage of about 76.7l/100km and C02 emissions of 234g/km against the petrol model’s 9.6 seconds, top speed of 222km/h, combined cycle fuel usage of about 11.2l/100km and an emissions rate of 260g/km.

The V8′s sprint time is down to 6.3 seconds and it has a top speed of 250km/h, gurgles fuel at 13.3l/100km and spews out 310g/km.

Mercedes suggests the R-Class has “coupé-like lines” although not too many would agree with that. The vehicles are just too big, broad and heavy-looking to look even remotely like anything sleek and sporty.

Having said that, I do like the new 10-spoke alloy wheels (18-inchers on the V6 and 19′s on the R500) and the fact that the wagons are long and wide, yet seem to squat down fairly close to the tar.

However, parking this big beast is not easy. The doors are huge, heavy and wide-opening which makes it high risk in windy car parks…. not the type of car that the pretty mummies will want to drive to Woollies or in which to fetch the kids from school. (Besides, most spotty teenagers would probably brand the big Mercs as uncool anyway…).

Although the seating arrangements in our launch drive vehicles were standard five seaters, fitting an extra two seats is an optional extra while it is a standard on the long wheelbase model.

Blind Spot Assist makes lane changing safer

The seats are comfortable and power adjustable, heated and ventilated. Leather seats are standard across the range.

In addition, although leg space is far from generous the luggage space is as spacious as a World Cup Stadium. The smaller models have 1950l and the long wheelbase 2385l.

The R-Class boasts a number of impressive safety features (many of them optional, so check before you sign on the dotted line), including the unique anticipatory occupant protection system called Pre-Safe which is a complete restraint system with eight airbags, crash-active Neck-Pro head restraints, a tyre pressure loss warning system and adaptive brake lights.

Other ride comfort and safety kit include Airmatic air suspension with the Adaptive Damping System (ADS), or Blind Spot Assist, which can make changing lanes significantly safer.

A Lingguatronic voice control system makes using the telematics systems relatively easy and the strain of docking these big barges is eased by a reversing camera. As soon as reverse is selected on the auto transmission the image from the camera is shown on a console display.

A handy counter for the backseat ankle-biters’ whines of “How much further is it still to go” is a rear seat entertainment system with screens attached to the back of the front seats on which they can play games or watch videos. (Optional and expensive but probably worth it for regular long journeys).

Wall-to-wall with goodies

The R-Class wagons are expensive, but they certainly are wall to wall equipped with the sort of high-quality goodies one would expect for the price. Goodies include 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel, a host of airbags, Brake Assist (BAS), tinted glass, an ISOFIX child seat safety attachment system, dual zone climate control, speed sensitive steering, a brilliant sound system (watch the expensive optional upgrades), easy to use cruise control and a fully adjustable steering column with audio controls.

The long list of expensive optional extras include things such as air suspension with Adaptive Damping System (ADS), vehicle level adjustment via a switch in the centre console and automatic lowering on motorways, Bi-xenon headlamps (darkened) with range adjustment, headlamp cleaning system and LED daytime driving lights on a chrome insert (standard on the R500), rear-seat entertainment system plus many others.

The R-Class is a big, impressive vehicle, guaranteed to impress the neighbours and your work colleagues, but whether it is practical is very much an individual choice.

Precious metal you’d want to protect

Whilst it is clearly classy it is not the sort of fancy metal you would want to use too extensively on gravel or badly pot-holed roads, not even to mention schlepping the garden cuttings to the dump in or taking the dogs in for a run on the beach. Fuel consumption is also likely to be fairly high in commuter traffic.

On the plus side, surveys show that the R-Class holds its value fairly well in terms of after-sales value and you are sure not to lose it in an airport car park.

Order it in black and you can probably also cut your running costs by renting it out as a hearse over weekends or as VIP transport for rap music artists.

2011 Mercedes R-Class: still fails to impress

The old R-Class was only saved by the unexpected sales in China, and the new model has had a few tweaks but it still fails to impress.

Where to now for the R-Class, the Mercedes-Benz that defined all that was wrong with the era of profligate car making?

For sure, the R-Class doesn’t know and neither, it seems, has Benz finally made up its mind about what it is and what it isn’t.

When it landed, the much-hyped brainchild of the now-head of Benz design, Gordon Wagener, it was the crossover of all crossovers; a car to fill white space in Benz’s line-up.

But it didn’t work. In fact, in spite of some historical revisionists in Benz’s marketing department, it was a disaster, saved by just two things.

One of them – the cost-effectiveness of building the thing off the GL 4×4 platform in the same Alabama factory – could be foreseen. The other – the car’s boom in a Chinese market that didn’t exist at its birth – was just a lucky coincidence.

So big is the car in China now that 35 per cent of the 20,000 R-Classes built each year are shipped straight there rather than languishing in showrooms in other regions.

But that was back when it was a crossover. Now, with a new nose, some new engine hardware and a few tweaks inside, it’s not a crossover anymore. It’s an SUV. That’s because Benz identified its lack of a singular purpose as one of the reasons for its slow sales in its intended markets (not to mention that it launched with just six seats and never recovered from there). So a new classification ought to fix it. But will it?

Probably not, to be honest. There are good points about the new R-Class, for sure, but most of them are only good points when you relate them to the old one, rather than to any other competing vehicle.

For starters, it’s less ugly, for sure. There are new headlights, new daytime-running lights and an upright grille that is supposed to project strength and fast-lane motorway cred.

That’s always helpful, but if the more-coherent family face will get them looking, the new engines are the things with the best chance of keeping them there.

I tested three R-Classes, the R350 CDI turbo-diesel V6, the R350 petrol V6 and the R500 all-wheel drive V8 and, curiously, while the V8 was the sweetheart of them, it would be the diesel you could live with every day, if only this fuel was more readily available in the UAE.

That’s because it has strength everywhere and what tremors there are from the diesel’s exertions have a lot of metal to hide in before they get to you in the driver’s seat. And it goes. It’s only a second or so slower to 100kph than the far-thirstier V8, but it eats the petrol pinnacle in a rolling sprint.

Down below those acres of bonnet space, the R350CDI might muster 260hp at 3,800rpm, but it’s got a tremendous 640Nm of torque right there from 1,600rpm. It’s a low-revving engine, for sure, but the seven-speed automatic has enough cogs to keep slipping through so you’re never caught short.

It’s the only one of the engines that felt like it was always up for the challenge of moving 2,250kg of R-Class every time you asked it to.

Also, (even though you’ll be hard pressed to replicate this on a normal drive), it posted 8.5L/100km on the combined cycle for 223 grams of CO2/km.

In fact, its main problem as a family wagon-SUV-executive express-non-boring limo or whatever else you can think for it to do, is that it is so heavy that it ends up with just 630kg of payload. While it can be optioned with four, six or seven seats, six hefty adults and a bit of ski/surf/footy gear is going to see you trending towards illegal.

We drove the V6 petrol, too, and that’s about all we want to say about that, because it’s not bad in a straight sprint, laggardly on in-gear sprints, not especially smooth and has about the same fuel consumption as the V8.

So Middle Eastern drivers may as well get the V8, as it is a much nicer machine. A lovely engine, even though it’s getting pretty old, the 5.0L punches out 382hp and 530Nm of torque, but its charm is that its delivery is so linear compared to the big mid-range surge of the diesel V6.

It’s free of tremors everywhere and, as soon as it’s got 4,000 revs on board, it just wants to keep spinning and spinning and making that wonderful, deep bellow. For an engine hauling 2.265 tonnes, it does a fair job of sprinting to 100kph in 6.3 seconds.

But it uses 55 per cent more fuel than the diesel and in daily life-type rev ranges where the diesel is strong, the V8 is often waiting for another few hundred rpm to get cracking.

The interiors have not been skimped on, with a significant upgrade across the board. The thing that gets you is how practical it actually is, from its air suspension to its adaptive damping that copes with the harshest potholes (though some of them do throw the rear end uncomfortably sideways on its springs without actually disturbing the traction). It soaks up 550L of luggage, but can stretch out to 1,950L if you fold down the seats. Or, if you take the long-wheelbase setup, it has 2,385L of luggage with the seats removed.

There’s so much interior luxury (and the potential for optioning up even more luxury) that you get the feeling sometimes that it’s more mobile armchair than it is a deeply engineered car. That’s harsh, because the R-Class would be a fabulous car to crash in, assuming you had to, because there’s no shortage of engineering in it.

If it’s short on anything, it’s product planning. They can call it an SUV all they like, but it’s not. It’s better, but it’s still, at heart, a very big, very thirsty machine that doesn’t really know what it is.
