2011 Kia Sedona

The 2011 Kia Sedona is the South Korean automaker's minivan. Like every other full-size minivan offered for sale in the United States, the Sedona is being spruced up for the 2011 model year, though with the Kia, the changes are less significant than those on the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.

For 2011, the Sedona has been retooled with a new powertrain and some new entertainment and technology features. The new engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 with 271 horsepower, teamed to a new six-speed automatic transmission. With the new drivetrain, the Sedona manages better fuel economy than in the years past--up to up to 18/25 mpg, according to the EPA. For drivers who might be lured by Toyota's "swagger wagon" Sienna, Kia counters with a sport mode for the automatic transmission.

A Top Safety Pick in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's tests in the past, and historically a strong performer in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests as well, the Sedona has yet to be rated for the 2011 model year. Both agencies have changed their standards for the new model year, but the Sedona is essentially identical in safety performance to the 2010 model, since the only exterior changes are a mildly revised grille, which brings it into the family of Kia cars a bit more naturally.

Like the new 2011 Nissan Quest, the Sedona has a second-row seat that doesn't fold flat into the floor--it's also the same scenario in the Odyssey and Sienna, but not in the Chrysler minivans, which offer Stow 'N Go flexibility. The Sedona's third-row seat does fold into the floor, though.

New features for the Kia minivan include standard Bluetooth, in both the base LX and upscale EX versions, reverse parking sensors, second-row bucket seats, along with satellite radio and steering-wheel controls for the audio system. The EX edition adds power-adjusted front seats, power rear-quarter windows, and a rearview camera that projects its information into the rearview mirror. Options include a power package with the rearview camera on the Sedona LX; a navigation system is optional on the Sedona EX.

The Sedona EX Luxury package adds on leather seats, heated front seats, power-adjustable pedals, and a sunroof. The Entertainment package bundles in a CD changer, a DVD entertainment system and wireless headphones.

Pricing for the 2011 Sedona starts at $24,595, not including destination charges.

2011 Volkswagen Routan

The Volkswagen Routan minivan returns for the 2011 model year, with much of the upgrading that's taken place on its sister vehicles, the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan.

The biggest news is a new powertrain for the minivan family. A 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 is the sole engine available, and it's paired with a six-speed automatic. The front-drive Routan makes 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and based on our experience with the Chrysler minivans, it's a brisk, pleasant performer.

Exterior and interior changes keep the VW look intact. And Volkswagen still forgoes the Stow 'N Go seating that sets the Chrysler minivans apart; the Routan doesn't have fold-flat seats in the middle row, but the second-row captains' chairs can be removed entirely, leaving behind underfloor storage tubs.

Safety gear has been carried over. The usual front, side and curtain airbags are fitted, with anti-lock brakes and stability control. A rearview camera is now available, but the Routan doesn't get the blind-spot detection system offered on the Chrysler vans.

The Routan's been praised as a higher-quality version of the Chrysler minivans, but with the improvements to those vans, we're eager to see photos of the Routan. (The 2009 model is pictured here.) VW promises they're coming soon--but in the meantime, pricing has also been revealed. The base $26,930 Routan S includes manual sliding side doors, cruise control, an AM/FM/CD with auxiliary audio jack, cloth seats, and power windows/locks/mirrors.

The $31,770 SE adds power sliding side doors, a power driver seat, heated mirrors, power-adjustable pedals, a CD changer and Bluetooth, and comes with vinyl upholstery. A rear-seat entertainment system with twin LCD screens is an option on the SE, as is a navigation system.

The $37,390 VW Routan SEL tops the range with its standard sunroof, automatic climate control, navigation system, satellite radio, USB port and real-time traffic. Options include the DVD system, and a premium package with a megawatt audio system and dual power front seats.

We'll update this review once the Routan is available for a test drive. For now, see our in-depth review of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan, and if you're curious about new powertrains, take a look at our 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan first drive.

Mercedes Minivan

Mercedes-Benz has dabbed some fresh make-up and applied the nip and tuck scalpel to freshen up the looks of its revamped, family-hauling R-Class station wagon and it has also added some new high tech goodies.

Not that many of us have even seen one of these big barges on the road recently – and little wonder, because only about 200 of them were sold in South Africa during the entire 2009 which does makes you wonder why they bother with it at all, seeing that there are already 97 different Mercedes-Benz variations on the local market.

Sure, the R-Class is spacious and it brims with safety, luxury and comfort features, plus it wears the bragworthy three-pointed star label, but it is expensive and it competes in a market segment where there are a number of less expensive and cooler, sportier options from which to choose.

Why is it… you know… here? Well…

It is kinda difficult to find a good real reason for its existence other than the fact that the R-Class is probably just another Mercedes weapon to continue the ongoing war against its two direct Teutonic opponents, Audi (with its Q7) and BMW (with its X5 and X6), all three easier on the eye and sportier than the Merc.

However, there are also quite a few other, more rands and centsables to consider, such as Merc’s own Viano, the Volkswagen T5, the likeable Kia Sedona, the Hyundai H-1 and even, at a push, the ugly ducklings, SsangYong Stavic and Chrysler Grand Voyager.

In essence the big Merc wagon is a quiet, comfortable, safe upmarket long distance cruiser for a family of four, maybe five.

It is classy, it’s got presence and it has acres of luggage space although, rather surprisingly, the leg space for the back-seat occupants is not all that generous – particularly if the driver is of the long-legged, long-armed species.

Nice ride

Of the three refreshed R-Class models introduced to the local motoring media recently I drove the R300 CDI (R582 400) and the R300 (R577 400) on a long and rather boring N2 from Knysna to Port Elizabeth, but unfortunately not the flagship R500 4MATIC LWB (R823 400).

This particular stretch of road is hardly a testing terrain to evaluate any vehicle so I can’t tell you much about the R’s handling and roadholding.

In terms of ride quality though it scores very well. Both vehicles are well-insulated, quiet, comfortable and easy to drive and the cabins are typically Mercedes, a bit dark and sombre, but neatly off-set by silver trim, switches and dials. Although not a fan of sunroofs in extreme African sun, they do help to brighten up the interior. The tilting/sliding glass roof is standard on the V8 but an expensive optional extra on the two smaller models.

Of the two V6 models, most of us preferred the diesel option which felt a littler perkier than its petrol sibling, even though it is only fractionally quicker off the mark and has a top speed considerably down on the petrol model.

Not thirsty

With a claimed combined fuel consumption figure of 7.6l/100km, the R 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY model requires around 7% less fuel than the previous configuration which was offered in South Africa, whilst offering the same power output and enhanced performance.

The V6 diesel engine pushes out 140Kw and 440Nm against the petrol option’s 170kW/300Nm output.

Although the bigger V8-engined model is a long-wheel base, the two V6 models are only available in standard wheelbase format.

The big brother R500 with the V8 petrol engine churns out 285kW and a hefty 530Nm.

Drop-dead ‘coupĂ©-like lines’…? Not really

Mercedes claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 9.5 seconds for the V6 diesel, a top speed of 215km/h, a combined fuel usage of about 76.7l/100km and C02 emissions of 234g/km against the petrol model’s 9.6 seconds, top speed of 222km/h, combined cycle fuel usage of about 11.2l/100km and an emissions rate of 260g/km.

The V8′s sprint time is down to 6.3 seconds and it has a top speed of 250km/h, gurgles fuel at 13.3l/100km and spews out 310g/km.

Mercedes suggests the R-Class has “coupĂ©-like lines” although not too many would agree with that. The vehicles are just too big, broad and heavy-looking to look even remotely like anything sleek and sporty.

Having said that, I do like the new 10-spoke alloy wheels (18-inchers on the V6 and 19′s on the R500) and the fact that the wagons are long and wide, yet seem to squat down fairly close to the tar.

However, parking this big beast is not easy. The doors are huge, heavy and wide-opening which makes it high risk in windy car parks…. not the type of car that the pretty mummies will want to drive to Woollies or in which to fetch the kids from school. (Besides, most spotty teenagers would probably brand the big Mercs as uncool anyway…).

Although the seating arrangements in our launch drive vehicles were standard five seaters, fitting an extra two seats is an optional extra while it is a standard on the long wheelbase model.

Blind Spot Assist makes lane changing safer

The seats are comfortable and power adjustable, heated and ventilated. Leather seats are standard across the range.

In addition, although leg space is far from generous the luggage space is as spacious as a World Cup Stadium. The smaller models have 1950l and the long wheelbase 2385l.

The R-Class boasts a number of impressive safety features (many of them optional, so check before you sign on the dotted line), including the unique anticipatory occupant protection system called Pre-Safe which is a complete restraint system with eight airbags, crash-active Neck-Pro head restraints, a tyre pressure loss warning system and adaptive brake lights.

Other ride comfort and safety kit include Airmatic air suspension with the Adaptive Damping System (ADS), or Blind Spot Assist, which can make changing lanes significantly safer.

A Lingguatronic voice control system makes using the telematics systems relatively easy and the strain of docking these big barges is eased by a reversing camera. As soon as reverse is selected on the auto transmission the image from the camera is shown on a console display.

A handy counter for the backseat ankle-biters’ whines of “How much further is it still to go” is a rear seat entertainment system with screens attached to the back of the front seats on which they can play games or watch videos. (Optional and expensive but probably worth it for regular long journeys).

Wall-to-wall with goodies

The R-Class wagons are expensive, but they certainly are wall to wall equipped with the sort of high-quality goodies one would expect for the price. Goodies include 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel, a host of airbags, Brake Assist (BAS), tinted glass, an ISOFIX child seat safety attachment system, dual zone climate control, speed sensitive steering, a brilliant sound system (watch the expensive optional upgrades), easy to use cruise control and a fully adjustable steering column with audio controls.

The long list of expensive optional extras include things such as air suspension with Adaptive Damping System (ADS), vehicle level adjustment via a switch in the centre console and automatic lowering on motorways, Bi-xenon headlamps (darkened) with range adjustment, headlamp cleaning system and LED daytime driving lights on a chrome insert (standard on the R500), rear-seat entertainment system plus many others.

The R-Class is a big, impressive vehicle, guaranteed to impress the neighbours and your work colleagues, but whether it is practical is very much an individual choice.

Precious metal you’d want to protect

Whilst it is clearly classy it is not the sort of fancy metal you would want to use too extensively on gravel or badly pot-holed roads, not even to mention schlepping the garden cuttings to the dump in or taking the dogs in for a run on the beach. Fuel consumption is also likely to be fairly high in commuter traffic.

On the plus side, surveys show that the R-Class holds its value fairly well in terms of after-sales value and you are sure not to lose it in an airport car park.

Order it in black and you can probably also cut your running costs by renting it out as a hearse over weekends or as VIP transport for rap music artists.

2011 Mercedes R-Class: still fails to impress

The old R-Class was only saved by the unexpected sales in China, and the new model has had a few tweaks but it still fails to impress.

Where to now for the R-Class, the Mercedes-Benz that defined all that was wrong with the era of profligate car making?

For sure, the R-Class doesn’t know and neither, it seems, has Benz finally made up its mind about what it is and what it isn’t.

When it landed, the much-hyped brainchild of the now-head of Benz design, Gordon Wagener, it was the crossover of all crossovers; a car to fill white space in Benz’s line-up.

But it didn’t work. In fact, in spite of some historical revisionists in Benz’s marketing department, it was a disaster, saved by just two things.

One of them – the cost-effectiveness of building the thing off the GL 4×4 platform in the same Alabama factory – could be foreseen. The other – the car’s boom in a Chinese market that didn’t exist at its birth – was just a lucky coincidence.

So big is the car in China now that 35 per cent of the 20,000 R-Classes built each year are shipped straight there rather than languishing in showrooms in other regions.

But that was back when it was a crossover. Now, with a new nose, some new engine hardware and a few tweaks inside, it’s not a crossover anymore. It’s an SUV. That’s because Benz identified its lack of a singular purpose as one of the reasons for its slow sales in its intended markets (not to mention that it launched with just six seats and never recovered from there). So a new classification ought to fix it. But will it?

Probably not, to be honest. There are good points about the new R-Class, for sure, but most of them are only good points when you relate them to the old one, rather than to any other competing vehicle.

For starters, it’s less ugly, for sure. There are new headlights, new daytime-running lights and an upright grille that is supposed to project strength and fast-lane motorway cred.

That’s always helpful, but if the more-coherent family face will get them looking, the new engines are the things with the best chance of keeping them there.

I tested three R-Classes, the R350 CDI turbo-diesel V6, the R350 petrol V6 and the R500 all-wheel drive V8 and, curiously, while the V8 was the sweetheart of them, it would be the diesel you could live with every day, if only this fuel was more readily available in the UAE.

That’s because it has strength everywhere and what tremors there are from the diesel’s exertions have a lot of metal to hide in before they get to you in the driver’s seat. And it goes. It’s only a second or so slower to 100kph than the far-thirstier V8, but it eats the petrol pinnacle in a rolling sprint.

Down below those acres of bonnet space, the R350CDI might muster 260hp at 3,800rpm, but it’s got a tremendous 640Nm of torque right there from 1,600rpm. It’s a low-revving engine, for sure, but the seven-speed automatic has enough cogs to keep slipping through so you’re never caught short.

It’s the only one of the engines that felt like it was always up for the challenge of moving 2,250kg of R-Class every time you asked it to.

Also, (even though you’ll be hard pressed to replicate this on a normal drive), it posted 8.5L/100km on the combined cycle for 223 grams of CO2/km.

In fact, its main problem as a family wagon-SUV-executive express-non-boring limo or whatever else you can think for it to do, is that it is so heavy that it ends up with just 630kg of payload. While it can be optioned with four, six or seven seats, six hefty adults and a bit of ski/surf/footy gear is going to see you trending towards illegal.

We drove the V6 petrol, too, and that’s about all we want to say about that, because it’s not bad in a straight sprint, laggardly on in-gear sprints, not especially smooth and has about the same fuel consumption as the V8.

So Middle Eastern drivers may as well get the V8, as it is a much nicer machine. A lovely engine, even though it’s getting pretty old, the 5.0L punches out 382hp and 530Nm of torque, but its charm is that its delivery is so linear compared to the big mid-range surge of the diesel V6.

It’s free of tremors everywhere and, as soon as it’s got 4,000 revs on board, it just wants to keep spinning and spinning and making that wonderful, deep bellow. For an engine hauling 2.265 tonnes, it does a fair job of sprinting to 100kph in 6.3 seconds.

But it uses 55 per cent more fuel than the diesel and in daily life-type rev ranges where the diesel is strong, the V8 is often waiting for another few hundred rpm to get cracking.

The interiors have not been skimped on, with a significant upgrade across the board. The thing that gets you is how practical it actually is, from its air suspension to its adaptive damping that copes with the harshest potholes (though some of them do throw the rear end uncomfortably sideways on its springs without actually disturbing the traction). It soaks up 550L of luggage, but can stretch out to 1,950L if you fold down the seats. Or, if you take the long-wheelbase setup, it has 2,385L of luggage with the seats removed.

There’s so much interior luxury (and the potential for optioning up even more luxury) that you get the feeling sometimes that it’s more mobile armchair than it is a deeply engineered car. That’s harsh, because the R-Class would be a fabulous car to crash in, assuming you had to, because there’s no shortage of engineering in it.

If it’s short on anything, it’s product planning. They can call it an SUV all they like, but it’s not. It’s better, but it’s still, at heart, a very big, very thirsty machine that doesn’t really know what it is.

BMW

BMW, short for Bavarian Motor Works (in English anyway), says on its website that the company fosters a culture of ideas. "Ideas are everything," one page says. It is this attitude of exploration that has kept the German car maker in the forefront of the automotive industry.

Known primarily as a manufacturer of luxury-imports and high-end motorcycles, BMW's tag-line here in the USA is, "The Ultimate Driving Machine," and that isn't far from wrong, considering the quality of design that goes into their cars, but what isn't was widely known is that the company was originally an aircraft engine manufacturer.

The founder of BMW, Karl Friedrich Rapp, took a contract to build V12 engines for Austro-Daimler in 1916, and because he needed more capital, he joined forces with Camillo Castiglione and Max Friz, It was after this that the name BMW was born - the company officially became BMW AG in 1918.

Since then BMW has been busy. They built the first motorcycle engine, and later the first motorcycle, innovated the designs of sedans and coupes, and eventually became the parent company of Mini, Rolls Royce, and Rover (as in Land Rover), though they sold the latter.

In 2000, under Christopher Bangle's direction, BMW redesigned their entire line, and while traditionalists balked, sales increased, and have continued to increase. Their 3-series cars are currently the standard to be met in entry-level luxury sedans and their performance vehicles, while pricey, are gaining popularity.

Today, BMW continues to put their ideas to work, even showing a hydrogen fuel cell concept car, the Hydrogen 7, in Geneva this year. At BMW, ideas really are everything.

2010 Acura MDX

Germany's world-famous Nurburgring track has been used as the testing and tuning grounds for the 2010 Acura MDX. It's considered the most challenging natural road course on the planet. High-performance automobile manufacturers from all over the world count on the many tests at Nurburgring in order to hone their chassis to perfection. A 3.7L 300 horsepower VTEC V6 engine lurks beneath the hood of the MDX. This six cylinder is very impressively powerful, rivaling the performance levels from any of its V8 competitors. It's joined by a Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission that is built with Grade Logic and Shift Hold Control technologies. The entire drivetrain operates smoothly and responsively; and thanks to its lightweight construction standards, it operates very efficiently as well.

In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the Acura MDX 2010 will travel 16/21 mpg city/highway. It features a 21-gallon fuel tank, which means that a single fill up will allow travel for more than 400 miles. With Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, the MDX conquers curves like few other vehicles are able to. Add in the optional high tech Acura Navigation System with AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic and Weather and you have a cruising machine that extends nothing but pleasure and excitement.   • Technology/Entertainment package for $5625;
  • The Advance Package brings the price up to $51,855;

One of the biggest sell points for the 2010 MDX Acura is its Super Handling All-wheel-drive(SH-AWD)system that enhances high performance levels and handling, especially on dry roads. The point is that there are no front wheel-driven, rear wheel-driven or traditional all-wheel-drive systems that are able to handle corners like the MDX. It's truly superior. This intelligent system constantly calculates the most efficient levels of power distribution by monitoring variables including wheel speed, lateral G-force, the angle of steering and the yaw rate. Understeering is reduced, stability is increased in the vehicle's rotation through turns becomes more fluent as the outside rear wheel is made to turn slightly faster than the other three.

Just some of the other ultra-cool standard features of the new Acura MDX are:

  • A 6-disc in-dash CD, MP3, WMA changer with eight speakers, auxiliary input jacks and XM satellite radio;
  • A rearview mirror that serves as a monitor for your rearview camera;
  • A remote linked powered tailgate;

It's absolutely loaded with available technology, luxury and safety features. It's one of the finest performing automobiles on the planet, regardless of pricing.

2010 Acura ZDX

It's difficult to determine which the 2010 Acura ZDX has more of, luxury or utility. It features Acura's biggest engine, bursting with power: the 3.7L 300-horse 270 lb-ft VTEC V6 the rivals the V8 engines of many competitors. It's of SOHC design and features 4 valves per cylinder for optimal powerage. When you add in the Acura Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) and other convenient technologies including the AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic and Weather, the Integrated Dynamics System and more, you end up with one of the most attractive options for safe family transportation available from any manufacturer.

Acura continues developing as one of the hottest and most innovative auto manufacturers on the planet. With retail pricing beginning at $45,495, the 2010 ZDX from Acura offers exceptional value on a variety of fronts. You'll be surprised with the large array of standard and optional features for safety, technology, performance and luxury. Keeping your family secure and injury-free is a top Acura consideration and the reason behind standard safety features including:

  • Occupant Protection Detection System (OPDS) that uses sophisticated sensors on the rear of the front seats to control rear airbag deployment;

  • Obstacle-avoiding auto-reversing windows and moonroof;
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System;
  • Vehicle Stability Assist;
  • Active frontal head restraints;

  • and loads more...

The EPA estimated that the ZDX Acura 2010 will deliver 16/23 mpg urban/rural. It features a 21-gallon fuel tank that will hold out for more than 400 miles. That's achieved in part because of the excellent power-to-weight ratio, Drive-by-Wire throttle system and high-flow exhaust. Technology-wise, the ZDX is difficult to whip with standard and optional tech features like:

2009 Infiniti G37x S Sedan

A Four-Door Hot Rod for Every Season

As a general rule, adding weight to a car is to be avoided if at all possible, as it's a detriment to performance and fuel economy. Adjust your goals, though, and it becomes a reasonable tradeoff. Take for example the 2009 Infiniti G37x S, an all wheel-drive version of Infiniti's star entry-luxury car.

If you skip straight ahead to the numbers, you'll find the G37x S is heavier and slower and doesn't handle quite as well as the G37 S sedan, but the numbers don't tell the whole story. Infiniti clearly designed its G37x cars to outperform their rear-drive G37 counterparts in less-than-ideal weather conditions, such as those in cold weather states during the winter.

While the all-wheel-drive G37x S would likely fair considerably better on snow-covered roads than the standard G37 S, on hot, dry asphalt, it falls slightly behind. The only major difference between the 2009 G37 S sedan we tested late last year and the G37x S sedan we just tested is the inclusion of Infiniti's "Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split" all-wheel-drive system lifted from Infiniti's crossovers, along with the seven-speed automatic transmission. Both cars featured the same 328-hp, 3.7L V-6 producing 269 lb-ft of torque and both were equipped with the optional Sport package.

The ATTESA-TS all-wheel-drive unit adds just over 150 lb of curb weight over the rear-drive model, tipping the scales at 3859 lb. The added weight and drivetrain loss make themselves apparent at the track. The G37x S was nearly half a second slower to 60 mph and through the quarter mile than the G37 S, hitting 60 in 5.4 sec and tripping the lights at 13.9 sec at 100.5 mph. Braking was similarly affected, with the G37x S stopping 10 ft farther than the G37 S, needing 120 ft to come to a halt from 60 mph. This can also be explained by the G37x S' smaller brakes, as it doesn't get the same upgrade that the G37 S does with its Sport package.

It was the same story around our skidpad, where the G37x S clawed out 0.85 g around the circle despite its all-wheel-drive traction. The G37 S, meanwhile, pulled off 0.90 g. Around the figure eight, the G37x S drove to a respectable 26.8-sec lap time at 0.66 g. This discrepancy, though, can easily be attributed to the G37x S' use of Dunlop Sport Maxx all-season tires while the G37 S wears Bridgestone Potenza summer tires. Test driver Scott Mortara also noted that the all wheel-drive car is more eager to hang the rear end out in turns than the rear-drive car, making it more difficult to put down big skidpad numbers.

The choice of all-season tires further illustrates the different purpose of the G37x. This car is meant to be both a high-performance luxury sedan and a capable winter vehicle, evidenced by the "Snow" toggle switch in the center console. This is a car designed to make you grin when you flog it in the summer and put you at ease when brave the snow in the winter.

If you do live where all-wheel-drive is a welcome ally in the winter, you probably won't have too much trouble justifying the extra cost. Despite the extra weight and driveline components, the G37x S suffers only a minor fuel economy penalty, turning out an EPA estimated 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. That's the exact same city mileage the rear-drive model returns and just one mpg down on the highway. Around the sunny streets of Los Angeles, we averaged just south of 20 mpg. With an MSRP that's just $2500 over the rear-drive model, the G37x isn't hard to justify if all-wheel drive is on your must-have list.

Our particular tester rolled into the Motor Trend garage wearing Moonlight White paint and a $42,985 pricetag. The optional Premium, Sport, and Navigation packages were added to the $35,750 MSRP, along with a rear spoiler and illuminated kick plates in the front door sills. That got us a Bose premium audio system, power-adjustable sports seats, a power tilting and telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth, one-touch windows all around, paddle shifters, 18-inch wheels and Infiniti's hard-drive navigation system.

Out on the streets, the G37x S rides a bit stiff on the broken pavement of Los Angeles, but it's never jarring. At low rpm, the V-6 engine is hardly noticeable, but give it the spurs and it emits an angry growl above 2500 rpm that's a bit louder than you'd expect. In a straight line, using the big, column-mounted paddle shifters is a little disappointing as there's a short pause before your command translates to a gear change. In the hills and canyons, though, the easy-to-reach paddles click off gear changes nicely and the G37x S handles nicely with almost no intrusion from the traction or stability control systems unless you really push it. Despite not getting the quicker steering ratio then the G37 S gets, the G37x S still feels plenty sporty, though it would be nice if the turning radius hadn't increased by nearly a foot.

Inside the car, Infiniti has updated the 2009 model with a new type of aluminum trim that appears much more lightly brushed than traditional brushed-aluminum surfaces, giving it a softer, aged feel that's more subtle than other metal trim pieces. The controls are well laid-out and the steering wheel is meaty and nicely shaped. If we had one complaint, it would be Infiniti's navigation system. While the system itself works fine, screen real estate is sacrificed to make space for big buttons and a large control wheel. This control wheel is awkward to use due to its location and its extra buttons are essentially superfluous since they're paired with a touch screen. Simplifying the controls for the combination audio and navigation system would go a long way toward making it more user-friendly. Also, while the iPod connections in the center armrest are nice as well, the inclusion of a Compact Flash slot instead of a more-popular USB slot or Auxiliary jack seems odd.

While the G37x S might not be quite the hot rod its rear wheel-drive sister is, it's a more capable car for those who don't drive on snow-free asphalt year-'round. It's still quicker than a V-6 Audi A4 quattro and returns slightly better city fuel economy, all while starting at several thousand dollars less than the German. What's not to like?

2009 Audi A6 3.0T quattro Sedan

Equal Measures of Quiet and Quick

Try splitting a market segment. That is, encapsulate the positives of both ends with none of the negatives. The Audi A6 does it deftly, bridging the space between the midsize A4 and full-size A8. Naturally, it shares engines with both, a 3.2L V-6 and a 4.2L V-8. But for 2009, it receives something in between: Audi's new supercharged 3.0L V-6.

Underhood the 2009 Audi A6 3.0T, the supercharger provides 11.6psi maximum boost to produce 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Max torque is available from 2500 rpm to 5100 rpm, where max horsepower starts and stays until the 6800 rpm redline. The result is eyebrow-raising acceleration as you pull the six-speed automatic's paddle shifters and watch as the digital speedometer slot-machines into triple digits. And that seat-of-the-pants sensation translates to the hard data: Acceleration to 60 mph takes 5.4 sec, just a tenth off the pace of the outgoing Nissan 350Z Track. Sure, the Z reaches the quarter-mile mark a little over a tenth faster, but this A6 is an inconspicuous, all-wheel-drive, 4139-lb sedan.

Audi is keen on that unassuming nature. The Roots-type blower sits concealed between the cylinder banks of the V-6. Hood popped, there's no indication of a power adder - save for the "TFSI" misnomer. There's no belt whine at speed, either. The engine fires in silenced, but powerful blasts. It's quiet and deceivingly quick -- a good combination for, say, a spy.

But this same sensation led to a minor disappointment when an iPod cable fell from the glovebox instead of trick spy gadgetry. While not effective at discouraging pursuers, the cable does integrate playlists and functions nicely with Audi's MultiMedia Interface infotainment system. Images displayed on screen flip around and minimize in a stylish fashion, and the system handles navigation and HVAC controls well. Version 2.0, set to arrive in the A6 later this year, promises faster processing and higher resolution.

Unfortunately, the A6 tester we had lacked Audi's drive select, a system available in the A4 that adjusts throttle response, transmission shift points, shock damping, and steering ratio. While the A6 exhibits respectable handling, matching the Volkswagen GTI around our figure eight (27.1 sec at an average of 0.65 g), at the limit, the chassis pushes the front tires hard. Audi divides the quattro bias 40/60 front to rear, but the venerable all-wheel-drive system can't hide the fact that 57% of the A6's total weight resides frontward. A sleepy gas pedal and an overboosted, numb steering feel only exacerbate a driving experience that can be less-than-engaging at times -- especially when the car is hustled hard.

Optioned with the topline, $5100 Prestige package, our A6 tester came with navigation, Bose sound, 18-in. wheels, bi-Xenon headlights, and a backup camera, among other goodies. Priced at $56,025, the A6 was just $1800 over the base price of a 535i xDrive and $1950 over a base E350 4MATIC. However, the most interesting comparison is with the supercharged 3.0L's older brother, Audi's 4.2L V-8. While 50 hp and 15 lb-ft stronger, the V-8 takes a 2-mpg city and 3-mpg highway hit versus the V-6's 18/26. Performance between the two is close -- Audi claims the V-8-equipped A6 reaches 60 mph in 5.8 sec. Yet, identically optioned, it costs $5750 more. The 3.0T, then, is a relative bargain.

The engine's an excellent addition to a solid platform. It adds V-8-like forward thrust without the increased fuel consumption, and beautifully complements the A6's smart packaging and well-crafted interior. Enthusiasts are still likely to choose the 5 Series for a more engaging (rear) drive, but the Audi's overall smoothness provides ample argument for its case. A perfect split? If not, the 3.0T is arguably the best A6 yet.
